It occurred to me that as I have a few things coming up that I shall no doubt want to LJ about, I had better catch up with a couple of posts.

On tuesday 18th June I went to see Pompeii Live at the cinema. It was a live event from the British Museum in conjunction with their Pompeii and Herculaneum exhibition. It was basically a glorified documentary, with experts talking about some of the exhibits - but it was amazing to see the details of some things on the big screen. They were 'proper' experts too, unlike the dreadful programme the BBC did with 'her from The Apprentice'.

One of the funniest moments was Peter Snow's face when Andrew Wallace-Hadrill was extolling the virtues of what they found in the sewers of Herculaneum! I could have done with a bit less about sex, and particularly the pan/goat statue. There are other interesting things about Ancient Rome - particularly the information about food and plants that came from the non-historians.

It was definitely worth going to though, and I would definitely go to another one.

At the moment I am working on some very old books from the Thompson Collection, which is a collection of material for the teaching of classics. I have just catalogued this gem:

Outlines of ancient history, from the Deluge to the division of the Roman Empire; compiled from the writings of the most approved authors.

(note that self-published twaddle is nothing new)

What really amused me though, was the preface, which I am going to copy out in full for you all here

Courteous reader,

The ocean of history, whose waves have so often been ploughed by vessels of ample dimensions and costly freight, is now to be traversed by a humble barkm whose commander is not entirely destitute of that spirit which may be called in him ambition, since the object of his exercise is usefulness, and who has consequently ventured to launch his frail skiff upon the deep; trusting that, should it escape the rocks and shoals of malevolent criticism, it may meet with some favourable breeze, which will allow it to "pursue the triumph and partake the gale"
