Holiday Day 4: Wales
May. 28th, 2009 08:13 pmOn Thursday we popped over the bridge to Wales.
Tintern Abbey
We headed off to Tintern Abbey first, and getting there before the coaches did meant we had it almost to ourselves - which was lovely. So peaceful. I must admit I always snigger when I read how Cistercian foundations were remote ;)
I took the time to get some photos I am quite pleased with:

We had planned to go to Chepstow after this, but the town (and castle car park) was effectively closed due to a homecoming parade of soldiers returning from Afghanistan. Much as I like solidiers, I didn't fancy being stuck in Chepstow for 5.5 hours!
So, we trundled over to Caeleon instead. I had passed the signs for this so often on my way to and from Swansea that it was about time I finally went and had a look. This sort of thing is definitely more me than Mum (she doesn't get excited by what English Hertiage describe as 'lumps and bumps'), so I did most of the climbing over styles etc to see the Ampitheatre

and barracks:

The lady in this photo surveyed me on behalf of Cadw about what I thought of the site. I don't think they will have many other medievalists from Leeds turning up on random thursdays in May!
