Quite a lot this month, or rather, quite a lot in Christmas Week ;)

Brothers Grimm

I loved this, and was really surprised I hadn't seen it before. The setting was fantastic. It looked like fairytale illustrations, and the costumes were great too. The idea of them being charlatans was great, it worked really well.
The best thing was that they incorporated so many features of fairy stories - the difference between fairy and reality, scary forests, mirror realities, and how dark it was generally - just like a fairy story. I loved the ending too.

Calendar Girls

This really had the perfect cast to make it so brilliantly funny. Mum and I thoroughly enjoyed watching this. Very heartwarming story about friendship, with incidental nudity ;) Some fantastic lines too - especially the bigger buns one!

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkhaban

A re-watch, but it stands re-watching. I do like the changes from the first two films. I also noticed even more changes from the book this time - and also that I didn't mind them at all.

The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe

I never saw this at the cinema, so I was pleased to see this on tv. I was really impressed with this adaptation. It is visually stunning, and doesn't stray from the book too much - the focus is different from the BBC adaptations, and I liked the difference.
Costume wise I liked the skirt Susan was wearing for most of the film, and I really loved her green dress. It was also great to see the armour on screen that I had seen at the Weta exhibition earlier in the year  - and I was very impressed with the battle scenes generally.

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest

Another re-watch that I don't mind. I love the effects in these, and the silliness of the humour. I love the style with which Jack meets his 'end'

Howl's Moving Castle

I hadn't seen this before, but I had wanted to, and I was very impressed. I loved the castle, and especially Calcifer. The whole setting was a wonderful mix of steampunk and idealised Central Europe  - I would love to live in that sort of world (sometimes).

Inkheart

I liked this more than falling asleep in the cinema would imply ;) I liked the concept of this (but then again I like Jasper Fforde), and I was very impressed with the characters, I particularly liked Dustfinger. I bet Helen Mirren liked the 'enter, riding a Unicorn' bit. Brendan Fraser even managed to not be too annoying.

Fiddler on the Roof

Both the last film of 2008 and the first film of 2009 as we watched this in preferance to the dire tv on New Year's Eve. I just love the music of this, and the maginficent backdrops. It doesn't seem 40 years old! Topol is fantastic.
I like to think that Tevye's family do have a happy ending ...

We just got back from Inkheart! I totally loved it.

PS and I adore Fiddler on the roof. My old archy Prof looks quite a bit like Topol, and during endless lectures on what Cicero did and didn't say, we'd picture him singing "If I were a rich man". Yes, we were bored:P
