Burton Agnes Norman Manor House

Took a side trip to here on the way home from Cruckley. I have been meaning to take Bryn here for a while, because while the main house/gardens aren't really his thing, I had a feeling this might be.

In the grounds of Burton Agnes is a Norman Manor House that still retains a lot of original features, despite having an Elizabethan brick facade from when it was used as servants quarters (even the servants building had to match!)  - so we were able to look at the sort of property a man of his 'status' might have had. Or at least one part of what he might have had, there would have been many other buildings too.

I didn't take any photos of the exterior, as there was no need.

Downstairs has fantastic vaulting:



The further back of these pillars has markings where people have played Nine Men's Morris over the centuries, but my photo of that didn't come out ;( I suspect due to user error. I need to get to grips with this camera - or get an even more idiot-friendly one.

Upstairs has less original stonework, but what there is is mainly on this wall:

I suspect that the second level of windows means there was another floor at one time, especially as the spiral staircase looks like it would have continued upwards. The English Heritage information boards don't say much about that, as it isn't really relevant to the Norman Manor House.

Neither have I, but I have been meaning to take Bryn, and we were near enough at Cruckley to make the side trip worth it.

Also wanted the cafe and farm shop!
