Ooops, I completely forgot to do this for August.

35: Luckenbooth Jenni Fagen

August's book group read - quite strange but quite enjoyable for the most part, but let down towards the end. Have passed this on to my colleague Rachel to read. I want to read her short fiction on the Scottish Witch trials.

36: Murder at the Mena House Erica Ruth Neubauer [Kindle]

A new detective series, and this opener was set in the Mena House Hotel in Cairo (which still exists, and still has a Pyramid view). Wonderful sense of place, and good characters. Looking forward to reading the rest of the series.

37: The12:30 from Croydon Freeman Wills Crofts [Kindle]

August's read for the Shedunnit book club. Not a train this time but a plane, although sadly the plane stuff, which was excellent, was only at the beginning. After that it was more of a howdunnit, and less good.

38: Weather Jenny Offill

September's book group choice. Absolutely awful. Disjointed thoughts with no real story and plot. Very disappointing.

39: 1979 Val McDermid [Kindle]

The first of Val McDermid's new Allie Burns series. Quite enjoyable - will likely read the rest of the series. A welcome respite in a run of very bad books.

40: A pin to see the peep show F. Jesse Tennyson [Kindle]

I think this is only the second Shedunnit choice that I have really hated, and unfortunately it was one of the longest books we have read. Based on the Bywater-Thompson case from a few years earlier. Far too much time spent in the head of the main character, and far too much 'philosophising'

41: Play as it lays Joan Didion [Kindle]

Another book spent in the head of a rather unpleasant person, surrounded by more unpleasant people. No plot, no point.
