19: Soldier Girl Annie Murray
I loved the characters in this, but I do sometimes wish Annie Murray wouldn't give all her characters such tragic backgrounds (although I know that makes for a better story). This was a very well written redemption story, and I enjoyed it a lot.
20 & 21: A Beggar at the Gate and Companions of Paradise Thalassa Ali
Why on earth did I wait so long to read the second and third parts of this trilogy?? This was an absolutely fascinating look at the culture of Afghanistan and Pakistan in the 1850s. The characters are wonderfully written (even the annoying ones) - and I felt really immersed in the story. I want there to be more though.
22: Serpent at the Gate: women and dance in the Arab world Wendy Bonaventura
This is interesting, if a little dated, and a lot of her writing on the current dance scene is very US centric. Still, there aren't many books on belly dancing out there, and I really enjoyed this for the history and some of the art/photographs. It was an absolutely huge book though, and took me ages to read as it was too big to cart around with me.
23: Special Assignments Boris Akunin
This was two short novellas, quite different from each other, but very enjoyable. I am getting to like this series a lot.
